Gallantry Awards Ceremony at BMICH

His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena, the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, conferred medals for gallantry on 300 personnel of the armed services at a colourful ceremony held  today (27 October 2016) at 'BMICH'.
 
The medals awarded today, the "Parama Weera Vibushanaya"(PWV), the "Weerodhara Vibhushanaya"(WV), the "Weera Wickrema Vibhushanaya" (WWV), the "Rana Wickrema Padakkama" (RWP) and the "Rana Sura Padakkama"(RSP) were awarded to a cross section of the recipients from the Army, Navy and the Air Force and included a number of posthumous awards as well.

The PWV is awarded to all ranks of the three services (Regular / Volunteer) for individual acts of gallantry of a military nature, bravery in the face of the enemy performed voluntarily. The decoration will be conferred by Her/His Excellency the President. This decoration was awarded to 03 recipients from Sri Lanka Army this evening. The recipients of this decoration are entitled to use the symbol PWV after their names.

The WV is awarded to all ranks of the three services for Individual acts of gallantry of a non military nature and for meritorious acts of a humane nature. The decoration will be conferred by Her/His Excellency the President. This decoration was awarded to 08 recipients from Sri Lanka Army this evening. The recipients of this decoration are entitled to use the symbol WV after their names.

 The WWV awarded to all ranks of the three services (Regular / Volunteer) for individual acts of gallantry and bravery in the face of the enemy, for meritorious acts of a humane nature. The decoration will be conferred by Her/His Excellency the President. This decoration was awarded to 58 recipients from Sri Lanka Army this evening. The recipients of this decoration are entitled to use the symbol WWV after their names.

The 'Rana Wickrema Padakkama' (RWP) which is awarded for individual associated acts of bravery in the face of the enemy and performed voluntarily was conferred by His Excellency the President.The recipients of this decoration are entitled to use the symbol RWP after their names. The RWP was awarded to 71 recipients from Sri Lanka Army, 02 recipients from Sri Lanka Navy and 11 recipients from Sri Lanka Air Force during the Gallantry Awards Ceremony at the BMICH this evening.

"Rana Sura Padakkama"(RSP) awarded to all ranks of the three services for distinguished conduct in the face for the enemy. The decoration will be conferred by Her/ His Excellency the President. Recipient of the decoration will be entitled to use the symbol RSP after his name. The RSP was awarded to 71 recipients from Sri Lanka Army, 43 recipients from Sri Lanka Navy and 21 recipients from Sri Lanka Air Force during the Gallantry Awards Ceremony.

Prime Minister Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe, State minister of Defence Hon. Ruwan Wijewardane, Secretary of Defence Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Minister of Regional Development, Hon. Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Chief of Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Kolitha Gunatilleke,Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva,Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathy   were among the distinguished guests at the event. A large gathering of Officers, Airmen, spouses, children, parents and relatives of fallen War Heroes, disabled Heroes and several invitees also witnessed the ceremony.
