3rd Annual Academic Session of SLCOMM Commences at Attidiya

Annual Academic Session- 2019 of the Sri Lanka College of Military Medicine (SLCOMM) organised for the third consecutive year, commenced today (22 March 2019) at the Eagles’ Lakeside Banquet and Convention Hall, Attidiya under the auspices of the State Minister of Defence and Mass Media, Hon. Ruwan Wijewardene.

The Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Hemasiri Fernando, Commanders of the Tri Services, Senior Officers of Tri Services, senior state officials, members of the diplomatic corps and distinguished scholars graced the occasion.

During the inauguration, President of the SLCOMM, the Director Health Services of the Sri Lanka Air Force, Air Vice Marshal LR Jayaweera made the welcome address.  Hon. Ruwan Wijewardene  delivered the opening remarks of this year’s symposium conducted under the theme ‘Military Medicine- Looking Ahead: Enhancing Military-Civilian Medical Synergies”.
The Key Note Speech was delivered by the Secretary General of International Committee of Military Medicine (ICMM), Major General (Retd) Dr. Roger Van Hoof (MD) under the theme “Enhancing Military-Civilian Medical Synergies: pitfalls”.

The Academic Sessions will continue for two days (23rd and 24th March 2019) consisting of nine sessions where thirty two (32) foreign and local speakers who will be sharing their knowledge under the themes of Combat Casualty Care, Under Water Medicine, Aviation Medicine, Women and Child and the Military, Acute Care Medicine, Amputation and Prosthesis, Medicine- Dentistry Synergy: For a Better Outcome, Diet and Obesity and Sports Medicine.

Plenary sessions includes lectures by experts on thematic issues such as ‘Sepsis Kills; Act Fast’, Medical Informatics and ‘update on Neurology’. A free paper session and an academic poster presentation will also be held during the course of the programme.

The SLCOMM aim was to promote research, innovation, training and advocacy in military medicine among its membership. It has also received recognition from the International Committee of Military Medicine (ICMM).
