Basic Life Support and First Aid Training for SLAF Fire Fighters

Basic life support and first aid training for SLAF Fire Fighters was arranged at all SLAF establishments under the guidance of Air Vice Marshal (Dr) LR Jayaweera, the Director Health Services as per the directives from the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sumangala Dias.

In line with this program, SLAF Station Colombo conducted the above course from 15 to 26 June 2020 in two sessions by Medical Officers and Nursing Staff from the SLAF Hospital in Colombo. The training course was greatly facilitated by the Commanding Officer of SLAF Station Colombo, Air Vice Marshal CB Labrooy and the same was conducted under the guidance of Group Captain (Dr) PAV Padmaperuma, the Commanding Officer of the SLAF Hospital in Colombo.

Each session was conducted over a period of 5 days and comprised of the following topics including theory and practical sessions with hands on experience sessions.
-    Basic Life Support
-    Basic first aid for shock, head injury, electrocution, drowning, abdominal injury, fracture, bleeding, stroke, chocking, convulsion and burns
-    Introduction to CBRN Warfare
-    COVID – 19  Pandemic

At the end of the course, the participants were expected to have a basic knowledge and skills of basic life support sequence including how to perform patient assessment, effective chest compressions, rescue breaths and how to defibrillate using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in order to sustain cerebral blood supply in case of cardiopulmonary arrest until the patient is taken to the hospital or taken over by a medical team. Further, they were expected to have basic first aid skills in order to save a life or to prevent deterioration of the illness until such time the definitive medical or surgical management can be done at a hospital.

Fire fighters as first responders will have the best opportunity to practice these skills in real life scenarios, saving lives, gaining immense self satisfaction as well as giving credit to the organization.

The Certificate Awarding Ceremony was conducted yesterday (26 June 2020) at SLAF Station Colombo under the patronage of Air Vice Marshal CB Labrooy, the Commanding Officer of SLAF Station Colombo. Group Captain (Dr) PAV Padmaperuma, the Commanding Officer of the SLAF Hospital in Colombo and Wing Commander Chamil Hettiarachchi, the Chief Fire Officer of the SLAF also participated for the occasion.
