6:28pm on Friday 15th October 2010
Celebrating the beauty of literature and communication, Sri Lanka Air Force held its English Language Day 2010 at SLAF Station Ekala on 13th October 2010.

The English Language Day is yet another means whose main aim is to enhance the knowledge of English language amongst SLAF personnel and to motivate them to appreciate its many uses.

In the 21st century English plays a vital role in all aspects of development and more significantly in the corporate world. It is the language of technology and symbolizes innovation, the world over. English also remains as the medium of communication in the Sri Lanka Air force for over five decades.

Hence the English Language Day is devised to develop the standards of air men and women serving the SLAF, through medium of performing arts  and creative writing, as they conduct themselves in a thoroughly globalized world in which English is essential.

The program which included competitions of drama, song, speech and essay writing were conducted on three consecutive days: 08, 09, 10 October 2010 in the auditorium at the SLAF Station, Ekala. The top two winners or winning teams were selected to re-compete at the finals of each event which was held yesterday, to choose the crème de la crème of the performances.

Reviewing the talents of the SLAF air men and women were a distinguished panel of judges from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Colombo, The Open University of Sri Lanka and the British Council.

Deputy Chief of Staff Air Vice Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama was Chief Guest at the occasion. Also present were distinguished members of the Air Force Board of Management, Senior Officers and other SLAF personnel. Adding a touch of glamour to the event were several veteran musicians and popular artists who participated at the SLAF English Day 2010.
