DISASTER MANAGEMENT TRAINING CENTRE CONCLUDES INSARAG TRAINING COURSE AT MULLAITIVU

The Disaster Management Training Centre (DMTC) at SLAF Station Mullaitivu conducted Basic Search and Rescue General-Training Course designed and sponsored by the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG). The INSARAG is a network of disaster-prone and disaster responding countries and organizations, dedicated to Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) and operational field coordination. It aims is to establish standards and classification for international USAR teams as well as methodology for international response coordination in the aftermath of earthquakes and collapsed structure disasters. And, the certificate awarding ceremony of this training course was held on Saturday (25 September 2021) using the Zoom platform with limited participation.

The content of this training programme included the theoretical aspects of search and rescue, practical exercises and simulation exercises. This training programme was organized by the Disaster Management Centre with the technical support of World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with INSARAG Regional Headquarters under the guidance of Major General (Rtd.) Sudantha Ranasinghe, the Director General of Disaster Management Centre.

The Training Course was conducted by the DMTC from 21st to 25th September 2021 under the supervision of Commanding Officer SLAF Station Mullaitivu, Group Captain ADR Liyanaarachchige and the Commanding Officer of the DMTC, Wing Commander SDDJ Ranasinghe. This training course was attended by two (02) Officers and eighteen (18) Other Rankers form the Sri Lanka Army; an Officer and nineteen (19) Airmen from the SLAF.

The final practical exercise of the INSARAG Basic Search and Rescue General-Training Course was launched at the newly constructed Exercise Simulation Area located within SLAF Station Mullaitivu. The consolidation exercise consisted of Landslide Rescue and Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue (CSSR) Operational scenarios.

The National Programme Officer of the WHO in Sri Lanka, Dr Sapumal Danapala and Ms. Haruka Esaki of INSARAG Asia and Pacific Regional Secretariat joined the closing session through Zoom and shared their views of this training programme. From the SLAF, Group Captain ADR Liyanaarachchige, Wing Commander SDDJ Ranasinghe and Instructors of the DMTC participated for the certificate awarding and closing ceremony.
