Joint Military Exercise ‘Cormorant Strike’

Joint Military Exercise ‘Cormorant Strike’ commenced on 21st November 2010. This incidentally is the first such exercise since the conclusion of the North Eastern conflict. The exercise will be continued till 29th November 2010 in the general area of Mannar.

In the 09 days exercise, the SLAF will deploy Bell 212 utility, MI 17 transport and MI 24 attacked helicopters in their dedicated roles whilst Y 12 and Antanov 32 transporters will airlift paratroopers and and logistics into the simulated theater of operations. The B 200 Beech craft will carry out its now dedicated role of being the "eyes from the sky" for the ground commanders, the decision makers and the observers. Following dedicated roles will be played by the "Air Contingent" :



a.   Air transportation of Special Forces  and Commando teams and induction- extraction from simulated     battle areas.

b.   Induction of paratroopers of the Special Forces and Commandos helicopters Y12,s and AN 32s transport aircraft.

c.   Continuous reconnaissance missions of the beachhead and simulated battle area using B 200 Beech craft

d.   Provision of Close Air Support to troops conducting the amphibious landing and supporting their assault to the objective using Mi24 Attack helicopters.

e.  Conduct of simulated or real Casevac, Air missions in addition to  logistic support for the simulated battle.

 This joint exercise is coordinated by Group Captain Sagara Kotakadeniya who will play the role as the Senior Air Coordinator.
