Match Draw Announced for SLAF Handball Tournament

The match draws and allocated times for the Sri Lanka Air force 60th Anniversary Open Handball Tournament 2011 which begins in three days, were announced this evening, 21 February at Air Force Headquarters.

Six teams will compete for the challenge trophy at Rifle Green on 24 and 25th February, 2011. Two teams from Army, one each from Air force, Navy, Ampara District and Prisons Department will participate in the tournament which will be held in collaboration with the Handball federation of Sri Lanka.

The first encounter will be SLAF vs. Army in Court 01 while Navy meets Ampara in Court 02. Morning matches will commence at 8am with afternoon sessions beginning at 3 pm and the final encounter in the night commencing at 7.30 pm till 9.00 pm Brandix Lanka, the country’s leading apparel exporter, is the principal sponsor for the tournament which will be worked off in games held both day and night. A challenge trophy will be the coveted award up for grabs by the winning team. Meanwhile a second trophy for the runners-up and another for the best player will also be on offer.  All participants will receive medals and certificates at the conclusion of the tournament which SLAF plans to continue as an annual feature.

The sport which can be played indoors, outdoors and on the beach entered the Sri Lankan sports scene in 2008. SLAF has engaged with the sports since last year, having played in one tournament already, which is now has an established presence at the Defence Services Games.  The relatively new sport currently has more than 1,000 active players within Sri Lanka while several more are in training to compete at national level in the near future.

President of Sri Lanka Olympic Committee and Handball Federation of Sri Lanka, Hemasiri Fernando praised the SLAF for the service rendered by the organization to the field of national sports adding that the tri forces have been instrumental in utilizing its resources to uplift standards in every sporting discipline in the island.

Chairman of SLAF Handball, Group Captain Janaka Nanayakkara, Secretary of the association Wing Commander Samantha Weerasekera and Secretary of the SLAF Sports Council, Group Captain Roshan Biyanawala were present at the media briefing. Officers representing the Army, Navy, Prisons and Police also attended the conference.
