Sri Lanka Air Force Palaly and the SLAF Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA)won the mens and womens Championship respectively in the Inter Unit Cricket Tournament held today (03rd August 2011) at the Rifle Green Ground SLAF Colombo.

The men’s encounter took place between SLAF Palaly and the SLAF Base Katunayake.  Winning the crucial toss the team from Katunayake elected to bat against the unbeaten Palaly team, which proved to be a bad decision on this pitch. The first six wickets of the Katunayake team went down for 30 runs where Palaly bowlers AC Perera (19/3) and civilian Chandiimal and LAC Herath bagged two each. Sergeant Silva batted brilliantly for the  Katunayake team and dragged the innings to put up a score of 103 runs in their 20 overs.

The Katunayake boys tried to cut off an impending Palaly victory by sending the opening batsman to the pavilion for no runs on the board and then the rain also did its best  to wash out their victory too when the score was 25 for two wickets in just 3 overs. Keeping the bad weather in mind Palaly batted quickly and finished match in the 15th over for four wickets to take the trophy to Palaly whilst AC Silva scored unbeaten 41 runs.

The first ever Inter Unit Women’s Cricket Tournament was won by the SLAF Bandaranaike International Airport (SLAF BIA) team whilst SLAF Academy China Bay became the Runners up. The 10 overs soft ball tournament was held at the Rifle Green Ground Colombo from 27th July 2011 onwards with the participation of eight Air Force women’s teams.

Batting first, the China bay team scored 109 runs for 3 wickets where Air Women Samudra Fernando scored an unbeaten 60 runs. In reply the BIA team achieved their target in the ninth over with the help of Air Woman Maduwanthi  who scored 47 runs.

Mr Basil, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket Tournament Committee graced the occasion as the chief guest whilst Chairman SLAF Cricket Air Commodore Sanjaka Wijemanna, Commanding Officer of Palaly Group Captain Athula Kaluarachchi, Commanding Officer 27 Regiment Wing group Captain Indika Weerarathna and Secretary SLAF Cricket Wing Commander Migara Perera were also amongst the distinguished gathering.
