'The ultimate cook-out' a cooking competition with a touch of fun

The Sri Lanka Air Force Seva Vanitha Unit launched its first project for the year 2012, with yet another novel introduction. This time it was a Cooking Competition aimed at gathering comradeship amongst the SLAF personnel and their families termed “The Ultimate Cook-Out”, A Cooking Competition with a Touch of Fun. The event was held on 29th January 2012 at SLAF Base Rathmalana, where the Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama graced the event as the Chief Guest.

This novel idea, a concept of the Chairperson of the SLAF SVU, Mrs. Neelika Abeywickrema was an “Inter Mess – Inter Station” cooking competition amongst SLAF Base Katunayake, SLAF Base Rathmalana, SLAF Station Colombo, SLAF Trade Training School Ekala and SLAF Unit BIA. Each team consisted of Five Ladies and Five Gents, total of ten members. The competition was divided amongst Children, Officers, Warrant Officers & SNCOs and Corporals & LACs of the above SLAF Stations. The menu and ingredients were given few minutes before the commencement of respective event and the team had 30 minutes to prepare the meal.

In addition to the cooking competition, there was a competition to select the ‘Best Decorated Kitchen’, where the participants were given 30 minutes to decorate each Kitchen with natural resources in keeping with the theme of the event. The enthusiastic participants were equally good at the decorations and the panel of judges had a tough time in selecting the winner.

The day was also a gathering for the families with many games and refreshment stalls available for the non-participants, which was organized to perfection by the Base Commander of SLAF Base Rathmalana Air Cdre Sumangala Dias and his team in the Organizing committee.

Expertise knowledge for the competitors was provided by Executive Chef Manesh Galagama, Head Chef of Koggala Beach Hotel, whilst Lithro Gas sponsored the event with the Gas cylinders and Cookers and Unilevers’ sponsored the Aprons.

SLAF Base Rathmalana emerged Overall Champions whilst SLAF Base Katunayake emerged as Overall Runners-Up of the event in the Cooking Competition. SLAF TTS Ekala was adjudged as Winners for the ‘Best Decorated Kitchen’, whilst SLAF Base Katunayake and SLAF Station Colombo emerged As Joint Runners-up.
