INTRODUCTION....................................................................................................................................................................

Exercise Cormorant Strike initiated in 2010 as an annual field training exercise is conducted jointly by the Commando and Special Forces Brigades of the Sri Lanka Army along with Special Forces components of sister services. It has now developed into a multinational exercise at which operational capabilities are acquired and assessed with a view to sustain overall combat readiness of the Special Operation Forces to meet diverse future challenges. The exercise encompasses carrying-out joint planning and execution of special operations in hypothetical situations. The Eastern Province of the country is utilized as the base for the Exercise in order to facilitate the participants to gain actual experience in Combat scenario. This includes Observers, Controllers, Evaluators and a dedicated Opposing Force. Approximately 2000 Special Operations troops from Army, Navy, Air Force and friendly foreign Forces will take part in the exercise.

The theme for Exercise Cormorant Strike – 2017 is based on United Nations (UN) Peace Support Operations, where the Special Operations Force (SOF) will be confronted with many scenarios related to the employment of Special Forces in peace enforcement situations.
 
From the beginning, the SLAF played a major role by providing initial training as well as operational assistance during the simulated missions. For Exercise Cormorant Strike 2017 SLAF will provide assistance in training for Special Forces and Commando, including specialized training on how to deal with helicopters, Embarkation & Disembarkation, Casevac, Heli Rappelling, Stabo, Rig & Drop, Pathfinder and Para jump training. Training sessions were conducted from 17 Jul 2017 to 08 Aug 2017 at SLAF Academy Cby, SLAF Base Hingurakgoda and SLAF Station Ampara. The Execution phase will commence on 04 Sep 2017 and will continue till 23 Sep 2017 at several locations in the Eastern areas of the country which includes 14 missions and a final attack. During the execution phase RSF will join with the SF and Cdo as well as ALO’s and FAC’s will be utilized in support of Air Operations. For the Exercise Cormorant Strike – 2017, Joint Force Air Component Command will be Gp Capt VB Edirisinghe and Joint Task Force Air Component Commander will be Wg Cdr MADMC Manathunga.

To develop the capacity of the Special Operation Force to undertake United Nations Special Operations in a peace enforcement environment.

To share military competencies in international arena.
To exercise the Elites in a joint nature – “Interoperability”.
To experience complex environments and exercise different levels of command under simulated scenarios.
To develop common understanding and efficient integration among different arms.
To develop military theoretical understanding and act as an eye opening platform on Special Operations.
To exercise fundamentals of Net Centric warfare in Special Operations and integration of advance technology up to a certain extent.
