Honouring the True Heroes of the Motherland
Uththama Pooja  Medal Awarding Ceremony

Honouring those who made the utmost sacrifice in the name of the motherland, the awarding ceremony to present ‘Uththama Pooja’ Commemoration Medals was held at  SLAF Base Hingurakgoda this morning, 3 December, 2010.

Families of 1925 soldiers, either killed or missing in action from the areas of Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa and Trincomalee were honoured at the ceremony. The medals were presented to the widows of the married service personnel while in the case of unmarried soldiers; the medals were presented to the parents.

Gracing this occasion as Chief Guest was Secretary of Defence Hon. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to pay his tribute to these fallen heroes. SLAF Director of Welfare Air Vice Marshal Anura Silva also attended the ceremony while other distinguished guests included Group Captain Sagara Kotakadeniya, Chairperson of Ranaviru Seva Authority Mrs. Padama Wettawa.

The Welfare Directors of the Army, Navy and Police were also present. The event was well attended by several senior officers of the tri forces and the police of the area.

Following the medals awarding ceremony, the Chief Guest toured the SLAF Base visiting the No. 09 Mi-24 Attack Helicopter Squadron and No. 07 Bell 212 Transport Helicopter Squadron.
