Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Visits Air Force Headquarters

The Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Major General (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne visited Air Force Headquarters this morning (13 January 2020). This is his first visit to AFHQ after assuming duties as the Secretary of Defence.

Upon arrival at Air Force Headquarters the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence was received by the Commanding Officer of SLAF Station Colombo, Air Vice Marshal CB Labrooy. The Secretary was then accorded a Guard of Honour by the Colour Wing of the Air Force.

Following the Guard of Honour, the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence was welcomed by the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sumangala Dias at the Headquarters Lobby. The Commander conducted the Secretary to his office where they held a cordial discussion. Thereafter Major General (Retd) Gunaratne was introduced to the Chief of Staff and Air Force Board of Management. The exchange of mementos was done to mark this historical occasion and the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence also placed his signature in the visitor’s book as well.

Major General (Retd) Gunaratne was briefed by the Director of Air Operations, Air Vice Marshal Ravi Jayasinghe on the role and capabilities of the Sri Lanka Air Force at the AFHQ Auditorium. The Secretary of Defence also addressed the gathering present at the Auditorium and reminisced on his past experiences with the Air Force. Following this, he was conducted to the Roof Top of the AFHQ building to witness a drone protection system.

Major General (Retd) Gunaratne was then conducted to the Air Operations Centre and the Air and Maritime Strategic Command Centre where he was briefed on operational matters of these two important command centers.
