From the inception the Sri Lanka Air Force has been the only esteemed organization to carry out HADR Operations and Special Operations through the medium of air in the nation. Some of these operations are aerial firefighting, Search and Rescue (SAR) Heli rappelling, Stabilized Air Body Operations (STABO), Rig and Drop, Special Patrol Insertion and Extraction System (SPIES) and sky diving operations.

On the concept of the Director Air Operations, Air Vice Marshal PDKT Jayasinghe, the 1st ever Special Operations Workshop for Helicopter Pilots organized by the Commanding Officer of the No 4 Squadron was held on 13th March 2020 at the Squadron premises. Commanding Officers, Officer Commanding Trainings, Pilots and Engineering Officers of No 6, 7 and 9 Squadrons took part in the workshop. The Commanding Officer of the Regimental Special Forces and Para School also joined in to share their expertise and difficulties in carrying out special operations.

The workshop commenced with the participation of the Director Air Operations. The Sri Lanka Air Force is fully aware that times and circumstances have changed and the environment that it must operate in is a constant change and the Air Force has to evolve accordingly which is why this workshop was of paramount importance. It served as a knowledge sharing forum of operational pilots and a common platform where pilots were able to voice out new challenges that pilots had to face due to new operational environments and circumstances.
