Food Security in Sri Lanka
The way forward to assure food security in Sri Lanka
Our aim is to assist government mechanism/civil authorities/private organizations to supplement rice and wheat consumption through value added jackfruit products to assure food security in Sri Lanka.
To date, “Guwan Hamuda Herali Peraliya” campaign has planted more than 24000 jack plants around the country. Major stake holders of this campaign are Sri Lanka Air Force, STF, Sri Lanka Prisons Department and many other government and non-government organizations.
The Main Objectives
we're working on
Short Term (First Year)
- Plant Seventy-five thousand jack saplings around Sri Lanka
- Initiate media propaganda and to convince small and medium scale entrepreneurs to open up new business avenues through jack and related products
- Mapping of jack trees in respective “Grama Niladari” divisions and develop a database on jack trees and its production
- Assist Government authorities to formulate a mechanism to identify the jack harvest information and take steps to preserve excess production for future consumption
Medium Term (First 3 years)
- Plant Five hundred thousand jack saplings around Sri Lanka
- To plant jack trees in identified areas and assist relevant government authorities to continuously monitor the growth and sustainability of the planted trees
- Assist government to develop business opportunities and direct optimum utilization of jack harvest.
Long Term (Within 5 years)
- Plant Five One million jack saplings around Sri Lanka
- To assist small and medium scale entrepreneurs to expand their business within the country to exploit the revenues in the foreign market through proper information flow
- To monitor the growth and sustainability of plants through SLAF establishments and relevant government entities.
- Assist community, government and non-government organizations on collection, distribution and value addition
