Description about the Nursing Assistant

A Nursing Assistant in the Directorate of Health Services supports Medical Officers and nursing staff in delivering patient care. They assist in maintaining hygiene, patient comfort, and basic clinical procedures within hospitals, wards, and field medical units.

Duties and responsibilities

(1) Assist Nurses and Medical Officers in patient care activities.

(2) Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of wards and equipment.

(3) Monitor and report patient conditions to senior staff.

(4) Assist in transporting patients within the hospital.

(5) Prepare beds, dress wounds (Under supervision), and provide basic care.

(6) Handle medical supplies and ensure proper storage.

(7) Support emergency and first aid services when required.

GCE O/L REQUIREMENTS

Passes in 06 subjects at the GCE (O/L) Examination in not more than two sittings including Simple (S) passes for Sinhala / Tamil, English language, Science and Mathematics subjects.
or
Pearson Edexcel International General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exam or Cambridge International Ordinary Level exams: Passes in 06 subjects in not more than two sittings including English. Grades are compulsory for all Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Biology), Mathematics and the marks obtained for a grading to be (equal or above) the lowest marks required for a simple pass in GCE O/Ls.

Should have undergone nursing training for a duration of not less than 01 year, including clinical training, from a reputed Government or Private Medical Institution and possess necessary paper qualifications to prove the same or possess NVQ Level 3 or above Nursing Assistant certificate
