ABOUT THE OPS AIR AIRMAN/AIRWOMAN 

a.         Air Traffic Services Assistants and Air Defence System Operators provide essential operational support to Ops Air Officers in the execution of their duties. They work under the supervision of Air Traffic Control Officers (ATCOs) and Fighter Controllers (FCs), respectively, contributing to the safe and effective conduct of air operations. ATSAs assist in the provision of Air Traffic Services by handling coordination tasks, maintaining flight progress data, operating communication equipment, and supporting the overall functioning of ATC units. ADSOs support Fighter Controllers by operating radar and surveillance systems, monitoring airspace activity, maintaining track information, and assisting in the execution of Air Defence operations.         

b.         Duties and responsibilities.

(1)       Air Traffic Services Assistant

(a)       Assist ATCOs in the provision of Air Traffic Services.

(b)       Maintain and update flight progress strips, logs, and operational records.

(c)       Handle coordination with adjacent ATC units and relevant agencies.

(d)       Operate communication equipment for passing routine messages and information.

(e)       Monitor aircraft movement information and support sequencing as directed.

(f)        Assist in the activation of alerting and emergency procedures.

(g)       Ensure accuracy and timely dissemination of operational data.

(2)       Air Defence System Operators

(a)       Assist Fighter Controllers in the conduct of Air Defence operations.

(b)       Operate radar, surveillance, and associated systems for airspace monitoring.

(c)       Detect, track, and maintain accurate information on all aircraft.

(d)       Update and maintain accurate air picture and reporting systems.

(e)       Pass timely information to the Fighter Controllers for decision-making.

(f)        Assist in communication with interceptor aircraft as directed.

(g)       Record and report Air Defence activities and incidents.

GCE O/L REQUIREMENTS
Passes in 06 subjects at the GCE (O/L) Examination in not more than two sittings including a Simple (S) pass in Sinhala / Tamil language and a Credit pass in English language.

Pearson Edexcel International General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exam or Cambridge International Ordinary Level exams: Passes in 06 subjects in not more than two sittings. Grade is compulsory for English language and the marks obtained for a grading to be (equal or above) the lowest marks required for a credit pass in GCE O/Ls.
