Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama, dedicated to the Maha Sangha, a newly-built Ginihalgeya (Kitchen) at Sri Samudragiri Viharaya, Rumassala, Galle at a simple ceremony held this morning; 27 March 2012.

Sri Samudragiri Viharaya is a Pirivena (A monastic college for the education of young Buddhist priests) providing Buddhist education to about 30 very young Buddhist student-priests resident in the temple. The temple founded from scratch by the current Chief Incumbent Ven. Siri Sudassi Thero some 36 years ago lies on the crest of the historic Rumassala mountain. Though the temple has seen a considerable development, much remains to be done even to meet the basic needs of the young student-priests resident thereat. Due to lack of an adequate base of benefactors and most of the young student-priests hailing from underprivileged family backgrounds from all over the country, the resources required for the development of the Pirivena has become highly scarce, even to the extent of receiving alms on a regular basis. This has made the government’s Samurdhi Programme the main source of obtaining dry rations to the temple where the young student-priests take turns in preparing their own food in the temple’s kitchen.

Due to lack funds for maintenance, the temple’s old kitchen had been crumbling over the years and had become a threat to the lives of young priests who have no option but to frequent the building to prepare their food. In this backdrop, the deputy incumbent, Ven. Kegalle Uditha Thero’s plea for help caught the kind attention of the Commander of the Air Force.  The task was entrusted to SLAF Station, Koggala commanded by Wing Commander Hailey  Rupasinghe and he and his men/women ensured designing, constructing and dedicating a building to the temple that could be used for both cooking and dining purposes in less than two months time.

The SLAF encourages the kind-hearted to extend assistance in whatever way possible for this Pirivena which is doing a great service to the society as well as to the Buddha Sasana. The most needed requirement now is a new building for a Library. Those interested may contact deputy incumbent, Ven. Kegalle Uditha Thero.
