The No 1 Mechanical Transport, Repair and Overhaul Wing at SLAF Base Katunayake have designed and developed a Low Cost locally manufactured Utility Vehicle to be used as a dedicated Tea Run Vehicle.

This innovative design was presented to the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sumangala Dias on the 18th of September 2020, during the Commander’s Inspection of SLAF Base Katunayake.

The No 1 Mechanical Transport, Repair and Overhaul Wing under the leadership of it Commanding Officer, Group Captain Kolitha Abeysinghe has conducted a survey with respect to vehicles being used for the specific purpose of distributing Tea and related refreshments on a daily basis for SLAF personnel performing Ground Defence Duties with SLAF Establishments. During this survey it was found that various vehicles presently available in the SLAF inventory were being utilized for Tea Run Duties and the cost incurred due to this requirement was extremely high.

With this in mind the technical team at the No 1 MTROW set out to design and develop a utility vehicle which can be manufacture from material and spare parts available locally and within the SLAF. Replacements of spares with a very minimal cost and time was also a paramount requirement in developing this utility vehicle. The future aim of this project is to provide a vehicle each to all SLAF establishments initially as dedicated Tea Run Vehicles in order to save funds which are being spent in maintaining other expensive vehicles used for Tea Runs.
