‘Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawariya 2011’ reaches Kandy

Police Rider crowned ‘Mountain King’

Riders covered a distance of 120km at the 2nd leg of the Guwan Hamuda Papedi Sawaruya which commenced from Minneriya to Kandy  today, 20 January, 2011 after being flagged off by Major General Boniface Fernando.

Jeewan Jayasinghe (SLAF) Gayan Kumara (Army) and Lakshman Wijeratne (Army) passed the 1st sprint point at Dambulla in first, second and third places respectively.

SLAF cyclist Jeewan Jayasinghe led the way at the first sprint by an impressive 1.30 minutes to reach Matale. However as the race progressed, positioning changed drastically as riders gained speed.

In a remarkable turn of events, Police rider Sudeera Nilanga was crowned ‘Mountain King’, being the first to pass the iconic landmark at Balakaduwa. He was followed by Hemantha Kumara (Navy) and Sisira Gatamurtha (Army).

Janaka Hemantha (Navy), Suwaris Premachandra (DMCC) and Sudeera Nilanga (Police) were the first three to cross the finish line as the second phase of the premier cycling tour held in lieu of the 60th anniversary of the SLAF concluded at Kandy a short while ago.
