Sri Lanka Air Force Base Vavuniya is strategically located in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, located 50 Km to the North of Anuradhapura, along the A-9 road. This Base was an RAF airfield during the World War II, which was later renovated and re-established by the Sri Lanka Air Force in 1978.

The airfield is fully equipped to handle medium and light transport aircraft movements, and was engaged in the vital role of providing air support to many military operations. This base is the home of the Air Surveillance Squadron of the SLAF operating Searcher Mk-2 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles which were used extensively during the fight against terrorism which ended in 2009. The No. 02 Air Defence Radar Squadron is also located at this base.

The Base also houses the No 02 Mechanical Transport Repair & Overhaul Wing which provides technical serives related to motor trasport at SLAF establishments in the northern and eastern areas.
