Gallantry Awards Ceremony at Temple Trees

His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksha, the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, conferred medals for gallantry on 231 personnel of the armed services at a colourful ceremony held this evening (15 July 2013) at 'Temple Trees'.
The medals awarded today, the 'Weera Wickrema Vibhushanaya' (WWV) and the 'Rana Wickrema Padakkama' (RWP), were awarded to a cross section of the recipients from the Army, Navy and the Air Force and included a number of posthumous awards as well.
The WWV, is awarded to all ranks of the three services, both regular and volunteer, for individual acts of gallantry and conspicuous bravery of a military nature of a high order in the face of the enemy performed voluntarily whilst on active service without regard for their own security. This decoration was awarded to 87 out of 99 recipients from Sri Lanka Army, 17 out of 20 recipients from Sri Lanka Navy and 26 out of 38 recipients from Sri Lanka Air Force this evening. The recipients of this decoration are entitled to use the symbol WWV after their names.
The 'Rana Wickrema Padakkama' (RWP) which is awarded for individual associated acts of bravery in the face of the enemy and performed voluntarily was conferred by His Excellency the President and given away by the Prime Minister the Hon. DM Jayaratne. The recipients of this decoration are entitled to use the symbol RWP after their names. The RWP was awarded to 61 out of 2068 recipients from Sri Lanka Army, 25 out of 97 recipients from Sri Lanka Navy and 15 out of 69 recipients from Sri Lanka Air Force during the Gallantry Awards Ceremony at the Temple Trees this evening.
Each Service is expected to hold their own individual ceremonies to present above medals to all other recipients of their service and Rana Sura Padakkama (RSP) as well.
The awarding of Parama Weera Vibhushanaya for 19 recipients from Sri Lanka Army, 01 recipient from Sri Lanka Navy and 01 recipient from Sri Lanka Air Force were made prior to this event at the 4th Victory Parade which was held on 18th May 2013.
