Air Force Fire Fighters at Task

The Government Agent (GA) Batticaloa Mrs. TSM Charles sought the assistance from SLAF Unit Batticaloa on 14th October 2013 to extinguish the fire at a rubbish waste facility in Thirappanthurai Batticaloa which had continued for nine days creating a health hazard for nearby residents due to emission of various harmful gases and which caused a few of them to be admitted to General hospital Batticaloa due to hypersensitivity to the smoke.
The SLAF Unit Batticaloa dispatched a fire vehicle with a crew of thirteen members led by Squadron Leader J Amarasinghe to the location and managed to completely douse the fire. They were part of the response team which is reported to have included a total of two fire vehicles, three water bowsers and a fire pump which were from the Urban Council Fire Brigade, Petroleum Fire Section and a large number of supporting troops were provided from SL Army No. 12th Gajaba Regiment and Civil Police Station Batticaloa.
The Commanding Officer SLAF Station Batticaloa Wing Commander GSN Priyadarshana was also seen at the location guiding and assisting the troops where they were able to completely extinguish the fire at this garbage dump.
