Enshrinement of the sacred Kapilawastupura relics in the curved dome of the 'Sanda Hiru Seya' Stupa at Anuradhapura, under construction as a monumental tribute to the victories of War Heroes, got underway yesterday (23 Nov 14) morning under the patronage of HE the president Mahinda Rajapaksa. Governors, Ministers, Secretary Defence and Urban Development, Tri service Commanders and a massive crowd of devotees were present at the occasion.
This is the first occassion that a Stupa of this magnitude is being constructed since the time of the ancient kings. The stupa is only second to Ruwanweli Seya in size. The sacred relics were placed in a special relics chamber built in the inner sanctum of the Pagoda. The sacred relics consecrated at five key temples were enshrined by the President in keeping with time held traditions, under the careful supervision of the Maha Sangha. Relics will be deposited on a lotus flower made out of precious stone inside a solid gold replica of the Stupa which is embedded with precious gems. Tri-Forces, Police and the Civil Defence Force personnel are involved in the construction of the mega Stupa.
