Air Women Win the Inaugaral Female Wrestling Championship

The Female Wrestling Team of the Sri Lanka Air Force became the winners at the first ever National Female Wrestling Championship which was concluded on 05th April 2015 at the Jayathilleke Stadium, Nawalapitiya. Out of the nine weight classes, the air women won six Gold, two Silver and one Bronze medals.
AC Karunasena HAN (48 kg), LAC Kumari MWDMP (55 kg), LAC Priyanga MWDM (58 kg), LAC Rupasinghe RMKM (63 kg), LAC Senevirathne GGA (69 kg) and AC Weerasinghe WECK (75 kg) had won the Gold Medals. LAC Wickramapala KKDP (60 kg) and LAC Sandunika AMW (75 kg) had won Silver medals and AC Maduwanthi RAK (60 kg) had won a Bronze Medal.
Wrestling as a type of mock combat and display behavior has anthropological roots and is known as an ancient sport prevailed during the time of Sumerians 5000 years ago followed by Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and many other civilizations. During the ancient Olympic Games, from 708 B.C., Wrestling was the decisive discipline of the Pentathlon. Professional Wrestling began in France around 1830s and Free Style Wrestling was introduced to Modern Olympics during the St. Louis games in 1904. Worldwide wrestling entered a new era by introducing Female wrestling as an Olympic discipline during the Athens Games in 2004.
Female Wrestling in the Air Force was inaugurated in 2011 under the Patronage of the Commander of the Air Force and the guidance of the Chairman, SLAF Wrestling, Air Commodore Priyantha Weerasinghe. Since its inception, the air women had shown remarkable progress through professional coaching and practices and were the inaugural Defence Services Female Wrestling Champions in 2013/14. The SLAF Women’s Wrestling Team is looking forward for great performances at the forthcoming SAF games as well.
