The Commander Ceremonially Opens Cafeteria at Katunayake

In order to meet a long felt need to provide good quality cuisine in an ambient atmosphere the Commander of the Air Force Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonatilleke conceptualized and launched a project to establish a Cafeteria on the premises of SLAF Base Katunayake. This was especially because this Base held the largest population of SLAF personnel. The Directorate of Civil Engineering was tasked to carry out the Architectural designing and the Civil Engineering Construction was entrusted to the Air Field Construction Wing, SLAF Base Katunayake.
The project being a major welfare facility the burden of funding was entrusted to the Command Welfare Fund, which incidentally generates its funds through contributions from SLAF personnel, and the investment of these funds.
Construction proper was commenced under the supervision of Base Commander SLAF Base Katunayake Air Commodore Ranil Gurusinghe in January 2009. Wing Commander Rasika Bellanage the Commanding Officer of the Air Field Construction Wing Katunayake managed the construction work whilst the logistics were managed by Squadron Leader Dhammika Samarakoone.
The Complex comprises a fully air conditioned restaurant area with seating for 200 persons, whilst those who prefer fresh air and the refreshing atmosphere of the Coconut groves of “Goluwapokuna Estate” can be comfortably seated on the verandas. In addition, three tastefully landscaped courtyards add to the internal ambiance. The garden too is well laid out and will add to the atmosphere which will make this a “must visit family restaurant “for all SLAF personnel. The food is well displayed whilst the caterer has ample facility for preparation and presentation of good cuisine for all ranks of the SLAF family based in Katunayake.
Finally the project was completed and the complex ceremonially declared open by the Acting Chief of Defence Staff, and Commander of the Air Force Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonatilleke on the evening of the 4th of March 2010.
