MINUSCA Celebrates Vesak - 2016

Sri Lanka Aviation Unit in MINUSCA celebrated Vesak Festival 2016, giving prominence to religious activities. They made it an event to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Sri Lanka to the other UN contingents of various nationalities.
A ‘Vesak Kalapaya’ was organized for this purpose which consisted of splendidly decorated and colorfully lighted traditional Vesak Lanterns and a Pandol.
The model Buddhist Temple was the main attraction of the spectators and they were much inquisitive of the replica of the Tooth Relic that was mounted on a rotating lotus and placed in the center of the Dhagaba. The replica of ‘Ruwanweli Sthupa’ crafted from discarded injection vials, was admired by many and was appreciated for its innovativeness.
All participants were given a glimpse of Sri Lankan hospitality through the ‘Dansala’ which provided refreshments while eagerly watching the performance of the Contingent “Fire Dancers”.
The Head of Office of Sector East Mr. Oumar Ba declared open the Vesak Kalapaya on invitation of the Contingent Commander. The Sector Commander Sector East, representatives from all other contingents and Civil staff members of the UN graced the occasion.
