SLAF RUGBY TEAM EMERGE VICTORIOUS AT LONGDON PLACE 19 – 11 AGAINST CR & FC

After a nail-biting thriller, the gentlemen in Blue clinched the victory over Longdon Place lads 19 - 11 during the Sri Lanka Rugby XVs Inter-club ‘A’ Division Rugby tournament held yesterday (29 January 2022) at the CR & FC grounds.
SLAF came into the game as the favorites of the season, even after a loss against Kandy SC during their first game of the season and determined to pose a challenge and steal the game from CR & FC at their home grounds. CR & FC was able to lead during the first half 11-10 with one try and two penalty kicks, while SLAF scored their points with one successfully converted try and a penalty kick. Anjula Ravidu Hettiarachchi scored the first try for SLAF during the 8th minute of the game, while Captain of SLAF team Nuwan Perera successfully converted the try and scored a penalty during the 31st minute.
SLAF dominated the 2nd half and kept the pressure on CR & FC by not letting them to score a single point. SLAF skipper Nuwan Perera scored 03 penalties during the 50th, 63rd, and 71st minutes to gain the lead and secure their victory by the end of the second half.
The game was played with strict adherence to COVID-19 guidelines.
SLAF pioneered in kick-starting the sport of rugby amidst the COVID-19 pandemic by organizing the Commander’s Cup Rugby tournament under strict COVID-19 guidelines and the guidance and leadership of the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana, and the support of the Ministry of Sport. Further, SLAF has been on the top in the 7s format of the game by clinching victorious in the Warrior Cup 7s Tournament.
Chairman of Air Force Rugby Group Captain Subash Jayathilaka, Coach Shamlie Nawaz and the Air Force Rugby Management team, are working tirelessly to keep the AF Rugby team fit and play their A-game during all matches and are looking forward to ending the season on a high note.
With this crucial win, and the completion of the 02nd week of the tournament, SLAF is placed 4th on the points table, and is scheduled to play against Havelock SC on 06 February 2022 at Havelock grounds.
