AIR VICE MARSHAL RAVINDRA LIYANAGAMAGE BIDS ADIEU TO THE SRI LANKA AIR FORCE

Air Vice Marshal Ravindra  Liyanagamage WWV, RWP, USP, MSc (Stat Stu), MSc (Def Stu), fawc (Pakistan), fndu (China), psc bid adieu to the Sri Lanka Air Force today (30 January 2022) after completing 34 years of dedicated service to the nation. At the time of his retirement, he held the appointment of Director Logistics of the Sri Lanka Air Force.

Air Vice Marshal Liyanagamage made an official farewell call on the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana at his office during the afternoon on 28 January 2022. The Commander commended him for his dedicated long years of service rendered to the Nation and to the Sri Lanka Air Force in particular. The Commander also emphasized that he was one of the key stakeholders during the time of need of our motherland and that his heroic history will remain etched in the annals of the SLAF. The Commander and the Air Vice Marshal exchanged mementos to mark the occasion. After which, he was accorded a Ceremonial Guard of Honour by the SLAF Colour Wing at the same day (28 January 2022) before he departed Air Force Headquarters for the last time.

Air Vice Marshal Ravindra  Liyanagamage was born in Colombo on 30th January 1967. He is a proud product of Richmond College, Galle where he excelled in Athletic, Football and Hockey during his school days. He was an enthusiastic member of the School Cadet Corps and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major.
 
He joined the Sri Lanka Air Force on 08th of June 1988 to the 19th Intake as an Officer Cadet and was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the General Duties Pilot Branch in the year 1990. During his training period he has successfully completed the Basic Combat Training, Basic Flying Training, Basic and Advanced Helicopter Training Courses.

After completion of training in the year 1990 he was deployed for flying duties as an operational pilot in Bell 212/412 helicopters. In mid-2005, he was given the Command of No 07 Helicopter Squadron at SLAF Base, Hingurakgoda which operates light utility Bell 212/206 helicopters and which carries out basic rotary wing training in the SLAF, maintenance, CASEVAC and utility duties. During his long tenure, he has actively participated for all major operations which includes Humantarian War to liberate North and East and he managed to log more than 7000 flying hours as an Operations/ VIP and VVIP Helicopter Pilot of Sri Lanka Air Force.
 
In March 2012, he was posted to Air Force Headquarters as the Senior Air Staff Officer at Directorate of Air Operations until he was appointed as the Base Commander of SLAF Base, Hingurakgoda. Later, he was appointed as the Defence Attaché at Sri Lankan Embassy, Russia and on return as the Base Commander of SLAF Base Ratmalana along with the appointment of Command Flight Safety Officer. In 2019, he became the Base Commander SLAF Base Anuradhapura and later was appointed as the Senior Air Staff Officer at Directorate of Air Operations, Air Force Headquarters again.

For his individual acts of gallantry and bravery during the Humanitarian Operations he has been decorated with “Weera Wickrama Vibhushanaya” (WWV) and “Rana Wickrama Padakkama” (RWP).
