SLAF Sports Stars Shine at Colors Night

Sergeant Priyadarshana Most Outstanding SLAF Sportsman of 2009
The Vartharasa Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding SLAF sportsman was presented to Sergeant Priyadarshana for 2009 at the gala Colors Night held at Water’s Edge yesterday evening; 13 January, 2011. The ceremony is an annual feature in the SLAF sporting calendar which is held to felicitate its sportsmen and women who have earned credit and honor in the past year.
Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonetileke the Chief Guest for the occasion. Four special awards were presented by the Commander at the event. The Vartharasa trophy for most outstanding sportsman awarded to Sergeant Priyadarshana for Swimming. Corporal Rasnayake who excelled in Athletics, bagged the Flight Lieutenant Priya Abeyweara GunawardanaTrophy for the most outstanding sportswoman.
The coveted Air Chief Marshal WDHSW Goonetileke Trophy for the most outstanding runner up sportsman went to Corporal Abeykoon for his performance in Volleyball. Meanwhile the Air Force Sports Council trophy for the most outstanding runner up sportswoman was presented to Sergeant Prasadika for excellence displayed in Rifle Shooting.
The Commander of the Air force Air Chief Marshal, Roshan Goonetileke, members of the Board of Management and several other senior ranking officers were present at the grand ceremony which honored a total of 268 sportsmen and women in 26 disciplines.
The event also saw the following 19 SLAF personnel received the Golden Eagle award for the remarkable performance displayed.
SLAF Station Colombo walked away with the Vernon Rajapaksha Trophy for being the Best Unit in Sports of the year. The outstanding Sport of the Year which is honoured by the President Air Force Sports Council Trophy was awarded to Hockey.
Meanwhile the Most Dedicated Sports Personality of the Year was presented to Warrant Officer CNS Stainwal while Corporal Chandimal C walked away with the ACM WDHSW Goonetileke Trophy as the Best Rugby player of the Year.
