Construction on the new entrance bridge for the Ruhunu Maha Katharagama Dewalaya project began on 16 February 2023, following the directives of the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana. The Commander conducted a site visit yesterday (25 June 2023) to assess the ongoing advancement of this esteemed project. The primary objective behind the construction of this bridge is to provide a convenient crossing facility for devotees to the revered Ruhunu Maha Katharagama Dewalaya temple. With a length of 446 feet and a width of 60 feet, this bridge aims to enhance accessibility and ease the passage of people to cross the “Menik Ganga”.
The project has made significant progress, with approximately 75% of the construction work completed thus far. The bridge is designed to incorporate eight staircases on both sides of the river. Particularly, the floor of the bridge will be finished with a granite surface, adding to its durability and visual appeal. The total floor area of the project is estimated to be 26,760 square feet, ensuring ample space for devotees to cross the bridge comfortably.
The SLAF construction team has been diligently working towards the project's completion, adhering to the prescribed timeline. The current plan is to finish the construction by 16 August 2023, ensuring that the bridge is available for public use at the earliest opportunity.
