SLAF JOINS NBRO TO SURVEY LANDSLIDE-PRONE AREAS IN BADULLA AND PASSARA

A comprehensive survey and mapping operation utilizing LiDAR technology was conducted yesterday (25 June 2024) to investigate suspected landslide areas in Badulla and Passara areas. The primary objectives were to leverage advanced LiDAR technology for accurate terrain surveying and mapping, identify potential landslide risks and enhance disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies. This initiative was undertaken in collaboration with the Reduction of Landslide Vulnerability by Mitigation Measures Project of the National Building Research Organization (NBRO).

The operation was facilitated using an M-300 Drone, LiDAR camera and Real Time Kinematic (RTK) mobile station to ensure precise surveying and mapping of the suspected landslide areas. Officers and Airmen from the SLAF Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing Team, which was led by Group Captain Ananda Kumarasiri, participated in the project, with their specialized expertise being essential for the successful execution of the survey.

Key stakeholders in this task included the Senior Lecturer at Sabaragamuwa University, Dr. D.R. Welikanna,  and the Commanding Officer of No. 2 Information Technology Wing Ekala, Wing Commander Indunil Sanjeewa.
