SLAF LAUNCHES FIRST EVER AERIAL SNIPER COURSE AT SLAF REGIMENTAL TRAINING CENTRE AMPARA

For the first time in the history of the SLAF a specialized training course in Aerial Sniping has been initiated at the Marksmanship and Sniper Training Squadron at SLAF Regimental Training Centre Ampara together with No.07 Helicopter Squadron at SLAF Base Hingurakgoda. This groundbreaking advanced sniper course is designed to significantly enhance the capability of trained snipers to acquire and engage identified targets with precision while airborne. This specialized training is a crucial element in modern military operations, combining the advanced capabilities of the aircraft with the exceptional skills of the sniper. The success of this mission lies in the seamless integration of these two elements, allowing for accuracy in targeting while in flight.

The inaugural course consisted of two officers and six airmen, all of whom are instructors with extensive experience in the field. The No.01 Aerial Sniper Course was commenced on 18 March 2024 and concluded on 03 September 2024. The trainees underwent both theoretical and practical training on: Type of Aerial Sniper operations, Engage a variety of moving and emergent targets from an aerial platform, Wind and distance calculations, Bell -212 Helicopter familiarization training, Inclined shooting, Live firing exercise from Bell- 212 helicopter.

The closing ceremony of the No.01 Aerial Sniper Course was held yesterday (03 September 2024) at SLAF Regimental Training Centre Ampara and the occasion was graced by the Commanding Officer of SLAF Regimental Training Centre Ampara, Group Captain Lalith Sugathadasa. He was welcomed by the Officer Commanding Training of Marksmanship and Sniper Training Squadron, Wing Commander Sampath Perera. Certificates were awarded to the trainees who successfully completed the training, recognizing their achievement in completion of the course.
