The novel event for the ‘Rajarata’ region Sky Flash 2011, the air show and the educational exhibition was declared open by the Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama yesterday (14th September 2011) at SLAF Base Hingurakgoda.Sky Flash 2011 is meant to bring the SLAF closer to the public in the area. An area, which has been devoid of such grand scale entertainment for a very long time due to the conflict in the country.
The Commander paid a visit to each and every exhibit and also looked over the facilities before the others to make sure everything was perfect. Over 1000 school children were first to get the opportunity to witness the exhibition where they were educated in aspects aeronautical and others.
Towards the evening one saw the crowd growing. People, not only from the vicinity, but also from the surrounding cities of Polonnaruwa were also among the crowd on the opening day. An old lady's appreciation off this event put everything in perspective; though she had spent her entire life in the vicinity of the SLAF Base, this was, she said the first time she had entered the base and come up-close with aircraft.
The exhibition is spread around 15 acres of land with over 100 stalls consisting of exhibits, souvenir stalls, food, clothes, fertilizer, bikes and tractors, beauticians, etc catering to almost all of one's requirements. Furthermore live aircraft shows, band shows, drill displays, Regiment special forces displays, air dog shows, fire fighting displays, attire displays (fashion shows featuring SLAF personnel) and a beat provided by the ‘Sanidapa’ in the latter part of the day, made the exhibition a lively fast paced area for the whole day. A separate area for children and other fun-games which were organised ensured that every one of the family got what they wanted
.
With all these attractions, Sky Flash 2011 will continue untill 18th September 2011 for all of you to taste a different kind exhibition at the Sri Lanka Air Force Base Hingurakgoda.
