SLAF Base Ratmalana is strategically situated in the Colombo District, approximately 10 kilometers south of Colombo city. It shares its location with Colombo International Airport Ratmalana, which primarily serves domestic air travel needs. The airport, managed by the Airport and Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka, acts as a vital hub for both military and commercial transport operations within the country, while also hosting several private airline operators.
The Base was officially inaugurated on 23 April 1985 by the then Minister of Defence, the late Hon. Lalith Athulathmudali, upon the invitation of the then Commander of the Air Force, Air Vice Marshal D.C. Perera. Initially under the command of Wing Commander C.N. Thudugala, SLAF Base Ratmalana has since grown in strength, now comprising approximately 200 officers, 3,000 airmen and airwomen, and 180 civilian staff.
Today, the Base boasts a range of facilities including a rugby ground, squash court, swimming pool, and a versatile reception hall. It serves as the proud home of No. 04 VVIP Helicopter Squadron, No. 08 Light Transport Squadron, and 61 Helicopter Flight — all of which play crucial roles in the operational fabric of the Air Force.
In recognition of their distinguished service, No. 04 VVIP Helicopter Squadron was awarded the Presidential Colours on 7 March 2009, and No. 08 Light Transport Squadron was similarly honoured with the Presidential Colours on 2 March 2019. Further underscoring the Base's longstanding commitment to excellence, SLAF Base Ratmalana itself was bestowed with the Commander’s Standard Colours on 24 April 2023 — a prestigious milestone in its proud history.
During the Eelam War, SLAF Base Ratmalana contributed immensely to national defence efforts, providing critical aerial transportation of troops and logistics not only for the Sri Lanka Air Force but also for sister services. Its importance extends beyond operations: the Base is widely renowned for housing the Sri Lanka Air Force Museum, an institution that vividly chronicles the evolution of air power in Sri Lanka. From Royal Air Force activities during World War II to contemporary SLAF combat operations, the museum offers a comprehensive depiction of the Air Force’s remarkable journey.
Adding to its operational significance, SLAF Hospital Ratmalana stands as one of the two principal hospitals of the Air Force, delivering vital medical services to personnel. The Base Headquarters functions as the central administrative body, coordinating and supporting all lodger formations within its purview.
SLAF Base Ratmalana remains not only a cornerstone of military aviation but also a living symbol of heritage, resilience, and excellence in service to the nation.
