59TH PHASE OF THE GUWAN MITHUDAM PROJECT CONCLUDES AT COLOMBO

The 59th phase of the 'Guwan Mithudam' project concluded successfully yesterday (17 July 2023) at the Maternal and Child Welfare Centre at Borella, by SLAF Station Colombo.
                      
The Maternal and Child Welfare Centre at Borella provides health care assistance for nearly 35 women during pregnancy, delivery and the postpartum period as well as approximately 3000 newborns, infants and children up to 18 years in the Borella area each month. And this Center is comprised of one doctor, one senior nurse and 12 midwives.

This project included the full replacement of deteriorated and damaged waiting area roofs with new curved roofing sheets, which allowed mothers and children to obtain the required assistance and vaccinations without hindrance from any weather conditions.
 
Additionally, renovated the staff lavatory to uplift the existing hygiene standards and facilities for the staff. Also, a pedestal fan was donated in order to provide a comfortable environment for the staff.

Further, a new sterilizer was donated to replace the long-overdue unserviceable sterilizer, which is an essential item for the Center to sterilize medical equipment that is used for pregnant mothers and children. Also, two new mattresses were donated to replace existing deteriorated mattresses, which were used for examination beds.

In addition to the above, the project also included the enhancement of the Maternal and Child Welfare Centre surroundings with proper landscaping, providing mothers and children with a pleasant environment to obtain required health care.

An event was organized to hand over the donated items to the Doctor in Charge of the Center after completing the renovations of the Maternal and Child Care Centre and ration packs for selected ten pregnant mothers, along with essential newborn baby items from the area considering their financial needs, promoting the spirit of charity and compassion.

By extending this commitment, dedication and substantial donations of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit towards supporting and uplifting the standards of an establishment with poor infrastructure facilities that provides immense support to the community, the SLAF aims to enable the Maternal and Child Health Care Centre to continue providing comprehensive assistance and vaccination programs for pregnant mothers and children in the Colombo district. The event was supervised by the Commanding Officer of SLAF Station Colombo, Air Commodore Suresh Fernando.

The project was funded by the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit and SLAF Station Colombo. The ceremony was attended by Mrs. Shanika Fernando, the President of the Seva Vanitha Unit at SLAF Station Colombo, Commanding Officer, Air Commodore Suresh Fernando, Officer In Charge of the Seva Vanitha Unit at SLAF Station Colombo, Wing Commander Harshani Katugampola, Secretary of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, Squadron Leader Viludani Yatawara, along with officers and other ranks of the station.
