Survival training is an integral part of pilot training as it helps them to cope with the situation if they ever have to ditch an aircraft in water or crash-land into a jungle. The Air Crew Jungle and Water Survival course of the SLAF is designed to give the best training possible to handle such situations.
The “Aircrew Water Survival and Jungle Survival Training 02-19” exercise was successfully conducted at SLAF Station Ampara from 11th to 21st February 2019 with the participation of 17 basic Flight Cadets belonging to 95th and 96th Flight Cadet Intakes. This is the first time that this training programme was conducted with cadets.
The course started with water survival training with lectures and practical sessions conducted at the swimming pool. This was followed by jungle survival training, which included a series of lectures followed by field training, map preparation, day and night map marches which were conducted by the Instructors of RTC Ampara.
Further, a Survival Lane Demonstration was conducted by RSF instructors and a river crossing exercise was conducted at the river bund of “Himadurawa” tank on the same day.
At the base training exercise, trainees were tasked to reach two pre determined way points in Ampara/ Himadurawa jungle area which was about 5 km and to camp along the bank of the Himadurawa Tank.
On 18th February 2019 they were given a simulated crash/ forced landing, ejection site and tasked to prepare for a rescue. The exercise was developed through number of e-mails depicting adverse weather conditions, enemy activities and delaying in rescue operation. Finally, the trainees were informed about activation of a rescue operation on the third day from the crash/ forced landing, ejection site, located 15 km away. All were provided with grid, aviation and satellite maps of the area for their study and planning.
The closing ceremony was held on 20th February 2019 at SLAF Station Ampara with Group Captain HWK Chandima, Commanding Officer of SLAF Stn Amp participating as the Chief Guest. Certificates were awarded to the trainees who successfully completed the training.
