SLAF Joins with Sirasa TV to Usher in the Traditional New Year at Hingurakgoda

As all of Sri Lanka went into festive mode with the approach of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, the Sri Lanka Air Force joined hands with Sirasa to present ‘Sirasa Wasantha Udanaya’ in the Hingurakgoda.
Sri Lanka Air Force base Hingurakgoda took the lead in the hosting of the event at the Dudley Senanayake Grounds in Hingurakgoda ably and enthusiastically supported by the team behind the television media channel ‘Sirasa TV.’ Air Commodore Waruna Gunawardena headed the organizing committee ably assisted by the base commander of SLAF base Hingurakgoda, Air Commodore Bandy Edirisinghe.
The event opened its doors to the young and old on the 13th of April, 2019. Proceedings commenced under the patronage of the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathy. The Chief of Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sumangala Dias, Members of the Air Force Board of Management and the Chairperson of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Anoma Jayampathy also participated in the event.
All the cultural performances were by the members of the SLAF Dancing Troop. The SLAF Angampora Pool had also created an “Angam Madiila” which was one of the highlights for the public.
The bicycle race and marathon saw participants speed across the roads of Polonnaruwa in competition and in pursuit of exciting prizes. ‘Sirasa Wasantha Kumari and Kumara’ lined up participants clad in festive finery, a competition based on who best personified the spirit and essence of all that is ‘Avurudu’.
Cheered on by family and friends and hundreds of onlookers, the public could be seen trying their luck at activities such as pillow fighting, splitting a clay pot, pinning the eye on a sketched elephant blindfolded and other exhilarating competitions.
The day’s proceedings concluded with a musical extravaganza by Flashback and also even more glittering performances by the SLAF Dance troop.
