PERFORMING ARTS DIVISION AT SLAF BASE KATUNAYAKE CELEBRATES 54TH ANNIVERSARY

The Performing Arts Division at SLAF Base Katunayake celebrated its 54th anniversary yesterday (01 July 2024).

The SLAF band was established as the Bugle and Drum Corps on 01 July 1970 with 12 members and formed as a full band in 1972. At present, the Air Force performing arts division has covered all spheres of arts, including marching bands, jazz bands, beat bands, classical and western dancing, comprising three sub-formations with 12 officers and 350 airmen and airwomen.

The band has been developed rapidly and presently functions as the Performing Arts division under the purview of the Director Performing Arts, Group Captain Jayarathna Amarasinghe.

In conjunction with the 54th anniversary, the Division carried out a donation campaign of essential drugs and medical items for the Apeksha cancer hospital at Maharagama. The division has donated medicine worth Rs. 300,000 with the help of serving personnel, retired members and well-wishers. The event was graced by the Director Performing Arts, which was followed by a social gathering of all members of the division at the Huts, SLAF Base Katunayake.
