SLAF Station Morawewa celebrated 51st anniversary by engaging social welfare through a series of community service initiatives aimed at uplifting local schools, preserving the environment, supporting healthcare facilities and promoting interreligious harmony.
The SLAF Station Morawewa took part in Shramadhana campaigns on 23 July 2024, focusing on improving the learning environments of three local schools. Morawewa South Sinhala School, Kambakotte School and Awwenagar Muslim School were the beneficiaries of this initiative. Service personnel at the station were actively engaged in cleaning and renovating the school premises to create a pleasant atmosphere for the students. This collective effort not only involved teachers but also received support from parents of schoolchildren. Over 250 children as a total are benefited from the enhanced facilities.
Recognizing the importance of protecting the coastal ecosystem, the SLAF Station Morawewa organized a coastal cleaning event at Nilaweli Beach on 24 July 2024. Collaborating with local environmental authorities and residents, the personnel cleared the litter from the beach.
Taking their dedication to saving lives further, all ranks at the station actively participated in a blood donation campaign on 25 July 2024. A total of 100 personnel donated blood, contributing to the Blood Bank at District Hospital Trincomalee and potentially saving numerous lives during emergencies.
On 26 July 2024, the station extended its generous efforts to hospitals in the area. Shramadana campaigns were conducted at Gomarankadawala Hospital, Mahadiwulwewa Divisional Hospital and Morawewa Preliminary Medical Care Unit to create a more hygienic environment for patients. The programmes involved cleaning and other activities to ensure a comfortable atmosphere for the approximately 200 patients receiving treatment each day.
To commemorate the 78 fallen war heroes during the war era within the Morawewa area while posted to this station, an Almsgiving Ceremony was held on 27 July 2024, with the participation of 51 Buddhist monks. The ceremony paid tribute to the sacrifices made by these heroes while invoking blessings for the whole Air Force.
Further, SLAF Station Morawewa organized another Shramadana campaign on 28 July 2024 at three religious places, namely Namalwaththa Mohidin Jummah Mosque, St. Anthony’s Church Morawewa and Pankulam Pulleyar Hindu Kovil.
In parallel to the 51st celebration, the customary working parade was reviewed by the Commanding Officer SLAF Station Morawewa, Group Captain BMH Balasooriya. The day proceedings were concluded with a tree planting programme, a cricket encounter and a musical night at the station sports ground yesterday (29 July 2024).
