Excellence Awards 2012
9:03pm on Friday 27th September 2013
The Excellence Awards 2012 was held at the ‘Eagles’ Lagoon View’ Banquet Hall of the Sri Lanka Air Force in Katunayake on 27th September 2013. Under the patronage of the present Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama, the excellence award ceremony was organized for the 4th consecutive year with the view of appreciating and motivating the meritorious work carried out by the men and women of the SLAF.
The Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. After the lighting of the oil lamp by the Chief Guest and other distinguished guests, prior to the commencement of the ceremony, two minutes silence was observed in honour of all Service Personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in the defence of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the motherland. This was followed by the welcome speech delivered by the Chairman Organizing Committee Air Commodore AWE Wijesuriya.
Based on the criteria established by the respective Directorates, three finalists were nominated for consideration to be honoured for their outstanding performance in each Trade and for their contribution to the development of the SLAF during the year 2012. In the selection rounds, three members headed by the Chief of Staff chose the winners based on the marks they had obtained.
13338 Master Warrant Officer KGPC Gamage Nursing (SP1) of Sri Lanka Air Force Trade Training School Ekala, the candidate who obtained the highest points from the selection round was awarded the Most Outstanding Airman trophy. Master Warrant Officer Gamage joined the Sri Lanka Air Force in 1991 with the 64th Recruit Course as a Medical Branch tradesman. He became the best recruit of that course and after completion of 22 years of excellent service he reached the climax of his Air Force Career as the Most Outstanding Airman, which an excellent achievement, especially for a non-technical tradesman. His advice for future generations is to always do whatever job you are given with enthusiasm, integrity and motivation and never forget the reason for joining the Air Force.
Following the awarding of the trophies, the Chief Guest addressed the gathering. The stage was always filled with well choreographed amazing dancing events performed by the Sri Lanka Air Force dancing troupe and a Drill Display performed by the Sri Lanka Air Force Colour Wing.
The Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Vice Marshal KA Gunatilleke and members of the Air Force Board of Management were among the distinguished guests at the event. A large gathering of Officers, Airmen, and over 185 relatives of nominees also witnessed the ceremony.
