The SLAF Judokas Excel at the 53rd National Judo Championship

The SLAF men and women Judokas became the Overall Champs at the 53rd National Judo Championship organized by the Sri Lanka Judo Association which was held at Judo Association Colombo from 21st to 23rd December 2013.
Overall the SLAF won the Open and Team categories of both men and women whilst bagging 15 Gold Medals, 10 Silver Medals and 10 Bronze Medals at the championship. Twenty nine judo societies scattered around the Island took part in the competition which saw 160 male and 90 female Judokas pitted against one another. While the men’s events in the tournament included 11 individual events, one in the team category and one open event. Meanwhile the women’s events saw 9 in the individual category and 1 each in the team and open categories being worked off.
In the men’s events, the airmen was placed first in the weight categories of 45 Kg, 50Kg, 66Kg, 73Kg, 90Kg, 100 Kg as well as the team and open events, where they established a new record securing the heights total (66.5 Points) for the men’s events in the history of the Sri Lankan Judo. The airwomen too excelled, clinching first place in the categories of 44 Kg, 57 Kg, 63Kg, 70Kg and 78Kg. They too won their team and open events.
The victorious SLAF Judo teams were captained by Leading aircraftman Wickremage JSK while the dedicated training for the sportsmen and women was ensured thanks to the team’s coach Mr.PG Sunil.
The Chairman of Foreign Employment Bureau Mr. Amal Senalankadhikara graced the finals as the Chief Guest. Chairman SLAF Judo Air Commodore KFR Fernando, Secretary SLAF Judo Wing Commander MASS Wijesinghe, senior officers and other ranks were also present at the finals.
