Commander Of The Sri Lanka Air Force Declared Open The SLAF War Heroes’ Monument At Ekala

The newly constructed Sri Lanka Air Force Ranaviru (War Heroes') Monument at SLAF TTS Ekala was declared open by the Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force Air Marshal HD Abeywickrama this evening (08th January 2014) as a tribute to 443 war heroes including Officers and Airmen killed in action throughout the three decade long conflict which ended in May 2009. The opening ceremony was held concurrent to the "Sri Lanka Air Force Ranaviru Commemoration Day" Parade.
The all members of the Air Force Board of Management, senior officers, officers and a cross section of the other ranks also attended to the ceremony.
The Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal HD Abeywickrama laid the first wreath and was followed by a Former Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force Air Chief Marshal Walter Fernando. Subsequently Chief of Staff of the SLAF Air Vice Marshal KA Gunatilleke, Director Welfare of the SLAF Air Vice Marshal MLK Perera, personnel of different ranks, representing all the ranks and the civilians of the Air Force who laid down their lives to safeguard the mother land against terrorism, laid wreaths at the monument. Spouses and children of the SLAF war heroes also joined in the tribute by laying wreaths and flowers at the monument.
The newly constructed Sri Lanka Air Force War Heroes' Monument was designed by Chartered Architect Jayanath Silva with inputs from the Directorate of Civil Engineering Wing. The task of constructing the Monument was undertaken by Civil Engineering Wing of the SLAF Base Katunayake. The Monument is built on an area of 4.5 acres.
This event was successfully organized by the SLAF TTS Ekala under the direction of the Director General Engineering Air Vice Marshal LHA Silva and Director of Welfare Air Vice Marshal MLK Perera. A special word of appreciation should also be rendered to the Commanding Officer of Sri Lanka Air Force Trade Training School Group Captain P Ranasinghe, Officers and the other ranks who were entrusted the task for all arrangements and worked tirelessly to make this event a success.
