1:58pm on Friday 25th April 2014
The first official Defence Services Handball Championship was worked off at the Jayatilleke Indoor Stadium in Nawalapitiya on the 25th and 26th of April 2014. The SLAF Men met the Army in the opening game worked off on the morning of the 25th of April. The SLAF Men playing one of their best games in their short Handball history of four years and outplayed the thus far unbeaten Army team. Incidentally the Army are the current National Champions and had not lost a single Handball game up to this match. The game was played at a rapid pace with each attack being followed by an immediate counter attack. The SLAF men won this closely contested game 28 - 27. All fourteen players contributed exceptionally and finally defeated the much fancied Army. The game being played for 60 minutes the scores display how hard fought the game was.
The SLAF Women then met the Navy who failed to match the relentless attack and the solid defence of the SLAF Women. SLAF Women won the game 20 - 7. Both men and women went straight into the finals as the Army men were eliminated by the Navy and the Navy women were defeated by the Army.
In the women’s final the SLAF women who are the currant National Champions displayed exceptional skill in both attack and defence to defeat the Army women 15 -7 and become the Defence Services Women's Handball Champions for 2014. In this game the SLAF Goal Keeper, LAC Dias, played superbly defeating a large number of goal shoots and specially three penalty shoots. LAC Ranaweera, Lac Hettiarachchi, LAC Chaturangi LAC Maduwanthi, and LAC Perera stood out in both attack and defence.
The men's final commenced with the SLAF shocking the sailors with five goals within the first five minutes of the game and putting the Navies well rehearsed plans to no avail. The continuous assault on the Navy defence saw it failing repeatedly with the SLAF leading 22 - 12 at half time. The second half saw an immediate turnaround by the Navy who assaulted the stoic SLAF defence and managed to reduce the margin to 22 - 20 within the first fifteen minutes, but the SLAF was still leading. The Navy assault failed to make any further impression on the game with the SLAF extending their lead to 30 - 25, at the final whistle. For the SLAF Men it was sweet revenge as they lost to both the Army and Navy in the 2011 games. For the SLAF Cpl Ratnayake the goalie had a great game saving a large number of goal shoots including two penalty shoots. Cpl Amerasinghe, LAC's Perera, Singhasooriya, Peiris, Navaratne, Liyanarachchi, Palihakkara, Kosta and Kumara played a great game of solid defence and relentless attack to crown the SLAF, Defence Services Men's Champions 2014. Both teams were managed by Cpl Mahesh Kumara, while the men were coached by Cpl Amerasingha and the women were coached by AW Cpl Gajanayake. Both Cpl Amarasinghe and AW Cpl Gajanayake played in all games as members of the respective teams.
The teams were provided tactical and technical advice and mentoring by Mr Daniel Cochard of Switzerland. The championship was hosted by the SL Army, and Rear Admiral S Dissanayake was the Chief Guest and gave presented the awards. The SLAF Handball team cards are as follows.
