No 111 UAV Squadron Celebrates its 6th Annivesary

No 111 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Squadron
at SLAF Base Vavuniya celebrated its 6th anniversary on 1 June
2014. The initial batch of UAVs was inducted by the SLAF in
the year 1996 and No 11 UAV Squadron was formed at SLAF Base Vavuniya.
Subsequently, the squadron was remodeled as No 111 and No 112 UAV
Squadrons on 1 June 2008. During the “Humanitarian Operation”,
the No 111 UAV Squadron extensively used its Searcher MKII UAVs over
LTTE controlled terrain providing real time intelligence and
surveillance requirements.
In the view of its 6th anniversary, a “Shramadana” Campaign was conducted at “Kidawarankulama” primary school at Poonewa on 31 May 2014, with the participation of all officers and airmen of the squadron.
The formation day parade was held on 1 June 2014 and the “Airman of the year” award was awarded to 20264 F/ Sgt Bandara BMASK (E & I) while merit certificates were awarded to 30342 Cpl Kumara WMDT (Gen Mech), 30866 Cpl Sameera KKAS (Air Photo) and 38415 LAC Samarasingha RVS (Air Frame) in appreciation of their contribution towards the Squadron. Further, a special donation was presented to Civil Labourer, Mr Dharmadasa by the Commanding Officer, Squadron Leader Thilina Rajapakshe for the treatments of his ailing son. The formation day celebration was followed by a cricket tournament organized with the participation of all ranks of the formation and the event was graced by the Gp Capt Kapila Wanigasooriya, Base Commander SLAF Base Vavuniya.
