SLAF Felicitates Two Promising Boxers

The Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Kolitha Gunatilleke promoted 018445 Leading Aircraftman Dilshan MYM and 39255 Madushan PGE, two leading SLAF Boxers to the rank of Corporal with effect from 01 September 2014, in recognition of their medal winning performance at the recently concluded Lions Cup International Boxing Championship. Further cash awards were also presented to them at a simple ceremony held today (01 September 2014) at the Air Force Headquarters.
018445 Leading Aircraftman Dilshan MYM enlisted to the Air Force on 18 November 2008 as an Ops Ground Tradesman and underwent four months of Basic Recruit training at SLAF Base Minneriya. Whist performing defence duties at SLAF Station BIA during year 2009, this Airman got the opportunity to represent his Station at the Inter Unit Championship and managed to reach semifinal stage. SLAF boxing committee having observed his techniques, tactics and fighting skills was absorbed into the SLAF Boxing Pool. With the training and exposure received at the SLAF Pool LAC Dilshan became a regular member of the National Boxing team. Subsequently he represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Boxing Championship in Amman Jordan, and won the Bronze medal at the Cuban Boxing Championship 2014 and represented the country at the Commonwealth Games in 2014. At the Lions Cup, which attracted 11 foreign teams, LAC Dilshan won the Gold Medal in Light Welter Weight Under 64 Weight Category. Besides he won the Best Boxers Trophy at this championship.
39255 Madushan PGE enlisted to the Air Force on 11 March 2009 as an Ops Ground Tradesman and underwent four months of Basic Recruit training at SLAF Base Minneriya. Subsequently he completed his Advance Trade Training (Gunner Course) at SLAF Vanni. He competed at the Inter Unit Boxing Championship 2010 representing SLAF Station Colombo and was selected to SLAF Boxing pool considering his fighting ability and the courage he displayed at the meet. With his keen interest towards the sport and the coaching facilities given by the Air Force, the boxer reached the national level and represented the country at the India vs. Sri Lanka Dual Boxing meet, and Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014.LAC Madushan won a Silver Medal in Light Fly Weight Under 49 Weight Category at the Lions Cup International Boxing Championship in 2014.
The Commander congratulated the two Boxers on their hard work and dedication in their success path from the humble beginnings and appreciated the professionalism displayed by the SLAF Boxing Coach 014501 LAC Weththasinghe HASS. The Chairman SLAF Boxing Committee AVM CR Gurusinghe, Secretary Sqn Ldr MTM Safrask and other officials of the SLAF Boxing Committee were present at this occasion.
