Sea Rescue Demonstration and Training at Valvettithurai

The Sri Lanka Air Force conducted a demonstration and an Air Sea Rescue (ASR) refresher exercise at Valvettithurai sea area on this morning (13 May 2016).
Pilots, SLAF Regiment Special Force members, Air Gunners and Technicians along with the instructors took part in this training exercise conducted by the No. 7 Helicopter Squadron at SLAF Base Hingurakgoda. Life savers and boats from the Sri Lanka Navy also joined with the SLAF rescue team during the exercise.
Air-Sea-Rescue refers to the combined use of aircraft and surface vessels to search for and rescue survivors of aircraft downed at sea as well as seafarers in distress. Hence, this demonstration and training would be beneficial for both the rescue troops and Civilians in North.
The SLAF rescue team has conducted many search and rescue operations to save lives of flood victims and fishermen capsized due to the gale force winds experienced in the sea. Apart from that, SLAF surveillance aircraft facilitate the rescue of survivors by directing surface vessels with quick and accurate references.
The training programme was conducted under the supervision of the Commanding Officer SLAF Station Palaly, Group Captain SDGM Silva and Commanding Officer No 7 Squadron Wing Commander NK Thanippuliarachchi as the Mission Commander.The training was instructed by Squadron Leader RV Jayasinghe.
The exercise was conducted with the support of SL Army, SL Navy, SL Police, Coast Guard Divisional Secretariat-Point Pedro, Principle of the Chithambaram College Valvettithurai for the area coordination. Service personnel of the SLAF Station Palaly (Air Traffic Controllers, Ground Defence Forces, Medical, Fire Fighters, Jungle Rescue, Logistics and Motor Transport Operators) were actively participated in this training programme.
