Air Force Riders Win Defence Services Cycling Championship 2018
The SLAF riders, both Men’s and Women’s Teams excelled at the Defence Services Cycling Championship 2018 which was conducted at Katunayake on 17 June 2018. The SLAF secured four gold medals in Men’s and Women’s Individual Categories and also won the Men’s and Women’s Team Championships.
The races commenced from 20th Mile Post at Katunayake and concluded at the same place. The men’s race covered a total distance of 140 km while the women’s race covered a distance of 60 km.
The star performers of the day were Corporal Buddika Warnakulsuirya and Leading Aircraftwoman Panchali Sulochana of the SLAF who won the Gold medals in men’s and women’s races. Sergeant Jeewan Jayasinghe of the SLAF and Able Seaman Janaka Hemantha Kumara of SL Navy won the Silver and Bronze medals in the men’s race whilst W/OD Ayesha Madushani of SL Navy and the Private U Kumarasinghe of SL Army won the Silver and Bronze medals in the women’s race. The SL Navy Team emerged as the runners up in the men’s race while the SL Army Team secured the runners up position at the women’s race.
The event was concluded with a colourful awards ceremony at SLAF Base Katunayake on the same evening and Air Vice Marshal PDKT Jayasinghe, Director Administration of the SLAF and Chairman SLAF Basketball graced the occasion as the chief guest. Officers, Men and Women form the three armed forces were present to witness the awards ceremony.
