Rear Admiral Simon Henley Conducts Lecture on How to Take the Air Force to the Next Generation

Rear Admiral Simon Henley (Retired) of the Royal Navy, the immediate past president of the Royal Aeronautical Society, a Fellow of the Society, honorary fellow of the association of project management and a fellow of the aeronautical society of Mauritius, conducted a lecture at the AFHQ Auditorium yesterday on the topic of “Taking the Air Force to the next generation: Factors to consider when acquiring new air assets”.

Rear Admiral Henley called on the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sumangala Dias at the Commander’s Office prior to his lecture.

Rear Admiral Henley served in the Royal Navy for 32 years as an Aircraft Engineering Officer. After normal progression through a range of operational and support roles in the fleet air arm, he served as the United Kingdom’s lead at the US/UK Joint Strike Fighter Programme Office. Subsequently, he led the United Kingdom’s Joint Combat Aircraft Integrated Project Team for 4 Years. His final assignment before retiring from the Royal Navy was as the Technical Director and Head of Programme Management for the Defence Equipment and Support Organization. He laid foundations for the current professional career structure for programme managers with the Ministry of Defence.

After Retirement, Rear Admiral Henley joined Rolls Royce as the Programme Director for new programmes in defence aerospace. In this capacity he was responsible for development and transition to production of the Lift System for F-35 Lightning 2 programme.

Rear Admiral Henley in currently working for Reaction Engines Ltd as a Business and Industry Strategy Adviser. He is in the process of helping the organization to bring the revolutionary SARBE engine to the market which will revolutionize access to space.

The Director Training, Director General Engineering, Director Aeronautical Engineering and the Director of Electronics and Telecommunication engineering participated for the lecture. Further, a cross section of Officers and Airmen of Flying and engineering backgrounds also participated for the event. On conclusion of the Lecture Rear Admiral Henley was presented with a memento of appreciation by the Director of General Engineering, Air Vice Marshal Andrew Wijesuriya.
