No. 02 Squadron Celebrates Its 53rd Anniversary

The No. 02 Heavy Transport Squadron at Sri Lanka Air Force Base Ratmalana celebrated its 53rd Anniversary on 02nd September 2010.

The No. 02 heavy Transport squadron is assigned to carry out transport of troops, goods, passengers, VIPs, VVIPs, etc., inland as well as overseas. Other than the above, its capable of carry out special operations such as parachute dropping, low level delivery,casualty evacuation, tactical operation, etc.

In 1957, it was established under the command of Flight Lieutenant PH Mendis (Air Chief Marshal PH Mendis – 04th Air Force Commander) and Group Captain Udeni Rajapaksha is the present Commanding Officer.

At the beginning it was equipped with Air Speed Oxford's, Prestwick Pioneer's, De Havilland Dove's, and S-51 Dragon Fly helicopter's.Its present inventory holds C-130,s, An- 32's and Golden Eagle air craft.

A parade was held commemorate the occassion. The Commanding Officer and the members of the Squadron laid a wreath at the SLAF Memorial at Ratmalana to remember those gallant pilots and crew from the Squadron who were lost in the line of duty.


Sri Lanka Air Force stands as the sole gallant aerial force in the nation, skillfully projecting airpower over its airspace and supporting the operations of surface entities.
