4:07pm on Tuesday 7th September 2010
“Blue, blue, blue” was the thunderous cheer heard last evening (September 6) from the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium as Sri Lanka Air Force won the all round championship of the boxing finals at the Defence Services Games 2010.
Showcasing a dominant presence in seven out of the ten weight categories, the highly technical performances demonstrated by the boys in blue, ensured them a clear victory.
SLAF won 03 weight categories, namely the Under 52 Kg – Fly Weight, Under 56 Kg –Feather Weight and Under 60Kg - Light Weight. The champs were also placed runners-up in the following 04 weight categories of Under 49Kg- Light Fly Weight, Under 54Kg- Light Welter Weight, Under 75Kg- Middle Weight and Over 91Kg- Super Heavy Weight.
The tallying up of the ten bouts showed Air Force topping with 21 points. Navy emerged second and Army third with 18 points and 08 points respectively.
A large turnout from fellow airmen and women ensured that the SLAF boxers’ morale was kept running high as they cheered in unison to offer their support and encouragement. SLAF Boxing Coach, Corporal R.T.O. Dissanayake too added to this spirit of enthusiasm, energetically supporting his fighters.
The competition was stiff; the movements, highly skilled but in the end the two opposing teams could not match up to the collective effort of excellence displayed by airmen pugilists.
Air Force boxer TDNT Jayakody , adjuged the ‘Most Scientific Boxer’.
The win was probably the crowning glory for Group Captain Nishantha Dharmadasa the SLAF's long standing Secretary Boxing who is scheduled to retire from the SLAF at the end of a ditinguished carreer as an Officer and also a sporting administrator in the SLAF. He is also one of the few Sri Lankans to officiate in International Boxing Meets.
Following are the names of Winners and Runners-up in the different weight categories:
